During the 12 months ended December 2012 central bank purchases of gold amounted to 534.6 tonnes, the highest since 1964.

American reserves may seem high (about the same as the next three nations combined, percent of total reserves at 76.1% lower than only Portugal (90%) and Greece (82.7%)) however historically, they aren't.
